A Worldwide Open Platform for the Physiome Project

The term physiome is a coined word linking between “physio” meaning “life” and “ome” meaning as “a whole”, and means integral of the human physiological functions in a similar manner of genome (gene + ome) and proteome (protein + ome). The concept of physiome has been triggered by advancement of measurement and information technologies which enable us to acquire and storage a huge amount of data about structure and functions of human physiology across multiple scales –from molecular and cellular levels to organs and individuals. Those data naturally drive developments of detailed and large scale mathematical and/or computer models describing observed physiological functions. This is because mathematical modeling of physiological processes may be the most promising and only way to quantitatively describe and integrate the physiological functions. Let us try to compare the processes where physiological functions emerge to a theater play, and suppose that the molecules and cells can be considered as the actors of the play. The activity of biosciences can be compared as a reverse engineering in which the researchers try to reveal; (1) all the actors engaged to the play, (2) roles of each actor, (3) interactions between the actors, and (3) the intention of the acting script and the regisseur, based on the close experimental observations and investigations. However, a huge number of the actors and complex interaction among the actors make this reverse engineering difficult. It is now well recognized that this reverse engineering cannot be accomplished without systematic and well-organized supports of mathematics, informatics and related technologies as well as physics and chemistry. We have been trying to establish such an integrated platform that can be utilized worldwide to promote the physiome sciences and knowledge integration.
