Skill Enhancement through Interaction between Humans and Robots

Miyazaki laboratory aims at constructing intelligent systems which enhances human abilities, and studies the efficient interaction and cooperation between humans and robots.
Our group researches the skill enhancement system from two aspects, (1) skill science and (2) human interface, and establishes methods of understanding human behaviors and supporting human activities multilaterally.

Recently, based on the knowledge and/or hypotheses of related fields concerning to human science, such as medicine, physiology, human engineering, sports science and so on, we have developed two robots which are capable to realize high-performances in cooperation with human.
Figure (a) shows a robot that plays table tennis with a human. This skillful robot with the abilities of judging time-varying situations and appropriately returning the ball can fight evenly with human.
Figure (b) illustrates an endoscopic robot and its human interface. We have succeeded in a laparoscopic cholecystectomy on a pig with our developed system. This medical support system is useful for the safer endscopic surgery.

We also research other human-assist robot systems including an intelligent orthotic robot.
