Intelligent Projection Mapping

Ubiquitous Projection Supporting Daily Activities

Have you heard about "Projection Mapping"? Projection mapping is one of video expressions in which dynamic image contents are projected onto the surfaces of various objects such as a car or a building. It changes their appearances in such a way that the car is apparently running but actually static or the shape of the building is apparently deformed but actually not deformed. Projection mapping has been widely known in Japan since an installation at Tokyo station in December 2012.

Sato laboratory have conducted several research projects on intelligent projection mapping technologies to support our daily activities. Recognizing human activities by applying the combination of various sensing technologies (e.g., computer vision, shape measurement and thermography sensing), we support them by ubiquitously projecting useful information onto arbitrary surfaces in our daily spaces. One of our proposals is the intelligent bookshelf projection. When a user touches the edge of a bookshelf, the cover image of a stored book located above the touched position is projected directly onto the book spines. As a result, the user can search for a desired book by sliding his/her finger across the shelf edge.

We have also conducted several research works on combining projection mapping and 3D printing technologies. We have collaborated with archaeologists to preserve historical objects using digital technologies such as computer vision and shape measurement. We have been trying to realistically reproduce the preserved objects at distant sites such as a museum or home by using 3D printer and projection mapping. We have also been trying to support industrial designs in which designers need to decide the color or texture of a product. We use a 3D printer to output the prototype and dynamically switch the colors or textures on the prototype by using a projector.
