STEP1: Find a professor with whom you wish to work → Academic Staff List
STEP2: Apply for usage of the "Osaka University AAD" system(∗) in order to obtain permission to contact the professor

∗ Students whose institution has an inter-faculty agreement with the School/Graduate School of Engineering Science as Exchange Students can skip "STEP2".

STEP3: (After you have received the result notification from AAD)
Contact the professor and receive his/her consent

If the professor decides to accept you, he/she will advise you regarding the necessary application documents.

Research Student

This is a system where students who wish to receive guidance from their supervising professors and conduct research on specific matters at the School/Graduate School of Engineering Science are selected to be admitted as research students.

Application Requirements (excerpt)

  • To become a research student at the School of Engineering Science, one must have graduated from a university (this includes one who is expected to graduate prior to the date of enrollment).
  • To become a research student at the Graduate School of Engineering Science, one must have received a Master’s degree (this includes one who is expected to receive his/her Master’s degree prior to the date of enrollment).

Examination fee, entrance fee, tuition

Examination fee…9,800 yen

Entrance fee…84,600 yen

Tuition…28,900 yen x number of months enrolled

⇒Special Auditor

Special Auditor

This is a system where students who are enrolled in a school / graduate school abroad with which the School/Graduate School of Engineering Science has mutual student exchange agreements who wish to do a research internship as well as take classes at the School/Graduate School of Engineering Science are admitted as special auditor.

Application Requirements

The applicant must be enrolled in an institution where inter-faculty agreement has been made between school/graduate school of Engineering Science, and be scheduled to graduate after completing his/her period of acceptance.

Examination fee, entrance fee, tuition

The examination fee and entrance fee are not required. If it is stated in the memorandum of the student exchange regarding a tuition waiver, the tuition fee (14,400 yen/credit) will be waived for the number of students stated.

Course Program for those who wish to do a research internship

  • Regular Exchange Program: Classes can be taken and credits may be earned at the School/Graduate School of Engineering Science.
    Regarding undergraduate level, as classes are basically conducted in Japanese, the student is required to have a proficient command of the Japanese language. For further information, please contact the following section in charge found below.

Those who wish to do a research internship as an exchange student (credits not earned)

Special Research Student

This is a system where graduate students enrolled in a graduate school abroad may receive research guidance at the Graduate School of Engineering Science at Osaka University.

Application Requirements

The applicant must be enrolled in a graduate school abroad (Master’s Program or Doctoral Program), and must be scheduled to graduate after completing his/her period of acceptance.

Examination fee, entrance fee, tuition

The examination fee and entrance fee are not required. Based on the fact that inter-faculty agreement has been made, if it is stated in the memorandum of the student exchange regarding a tuition waiver, the tuition fee (28,900 yen/month) will be waived for the number of students stated.

How to contact the professor you wish to work with

Refer to the Academic Staff list , choose the professor with whom you wish to work with, and send him/her an email.

All research students and exchange students whose institutions do not have an inter-faculty agreement with the School/ Graduate School of Engineering Science must apply to “ AAD ” before contacting the professor.

From application to admission: how it works

For those applying from overseas, research students as well as special research students are admitted at any time, special auditors are admitted according to the program which they wish to participate in. In the case where you need to acquire a status of residence as a “student” you will need to contact the professor you wish to work with four months prior to your scheduled admission to Osaka University. After you have submitted your application etc. and have gone through screening, your admission will be discussed and decided on at the School/Graduate School of Engineering Science faculty meeting. Upon being accepted, you will be asked to proceed with the necessary procedures.

Guide to programs for Special Auditors (for Undergraduate level)

FrontierLab Mini Program

[Outline]

Each student will be assigned to a particular research group where they will do research under their supervisor's guidance. The duration of the research is set from 2 to 12 weeks. Credits are available for each period of study.

[Exchange duration and subject registration]

It is not necessary to adhere to the Osaka University semester system as we offer flexible periods of study. The duration is set from as short as 2 weeks to the maximum 12 weeks, as you can see from the chart below. Credits to be obtained differ depending on the period of study and study hours. One subject per FrontierLab Mini Program can be chosen and registered.
